A full time clinical secretary is sought for Occupational Health Services who provide a service to Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and other external clients and organisations. The main role of the postholder is to provide full secretarial support to the OH practitioners, including audio typing. Other roles such as covering reception, responding to telephone and email enquiries and further admin tasks as required are also included.

Good knowledge and experience of using Microsoft Outlook and Word is essential as well as proven experience of working with Excel spread sheets. You should also have a good level of literacy and numerical skills. Desirable skills include experience in a front of house (reception) role and/or a client or customer facing role.

Occupational Health is based in lovely refurbished premises on the St Mary’s site, which is a short walk from the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

The postholder will be educated to GCSE level or equivalent in English and Maths and possess keyboard skills to RSA Level 2 or NVQ level 2 in Administration, or be able to demonstrate equivalent through experience gained.

Core hours for this post are 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to demonstrate their keyboard and audio skills during the interview.

  • Posts in the Trust are subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Criminal Records Bureau to check for any previous criminal spent and unspent convictions, reprimands, and cautions.
  • Appointment to this role will commence at the lowest salary point unless confirmed otherwise by HR Employment Services (Recruitment, Administration & Terms and Conditions)
  • We may also use this advert to build our Bank staff. If you are unsuccessful at interview for a substantive role but meet the BSUH standards you may be offered a bank post.

The criteria and terms are set out below;

  • If you do not fulfil the essential qualification/skills listed on the job description and specification, you could be offered a Training Contract for 12-24 months, this is dependent on the vacancy and subject to terms and conditions.


  • The pay banding will be set at the band below the advertised post. For internal or current NHS employees you will remain on your current banding, this only applies for those currently on Bands 1-4.


  • On successful completion of your training and subject to sign off by your manager / mentor you will automatically transition to the substantive banding which the vacancy was originally advertised at.
